- Acorn Opens Up Horizons in Hampshire
-
- Embargo Release Date 20th January 1993
-
- Acorn Computers is sponsoring a group of 45 schools in and around Hampshire
- as part of an integrated media project in education.
-
- The Horizon Project aims to deliver some thirty multimedia applications
- built by teachers and will also demonstrate the power of multimedia in the
- hands of pupils in aged from five to 18. At the end of the year-long
- project a report will be written on the creation of multimedia applications
- and the integration of different types of media in curriculum-related
- subjects.
-
- Acorn's initial sponsorship of over #50,000 has helped the schools involved
- acquire equipment and expertise with which to start authoring their
- particular projects. Two software packages - Genesis from Oak Solutions and
- Magpie from Longman Logotron - are being used as the principal authoring
- media and investigation is being made into the possible uses of input
- sourcing equipment such as scanners, digitisers, sound samplers, genlock
- cards and other devices.
-
- Horizon enables the material developers to design their packages in
- response to the National Curriculum. These projects address specific links
- at particular attainment targets within such subject areas as modern
- languages, technology, history, english, science, geography and maths.
-
- Each package is being written to encourage pupils to ask questions, make
- deductions and to search for answers away from the computer. Pupils are
- actively encouraged to become involved in the learning process and
- interactivity is a key feature.
-
- It is expected that the Horizon project will run until September 1993.
